Peretz Davidovich Markish was born in 1895 in Ukraine. During World War I he served as a private in the Russian Imperial Army. An author of many poems, plays and novels, he was a member of the Kiev group of Yiddish poets. He lived in Berlin, Paris, London, Rome and Warsaw, returned to Russia and joined the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. Arrested and executed 12 August 1952 in Moscow.
